Office 15, the next iteration of Microsoft?s ubiquitous productivity suite, won?t be available ?til early next year, but the company will offer the world its first look at the software on Monday, according to USA Today. And there?s a lot on the line.
While Windows runs on 84 percent of all PCs, many users choose not to upgrade to the latest version, especially in the corporate world, where software that?s merely evolutionary is considered not worth the expense. In fact, although Windows 7?s been out since 2009, many enterprise customers still use Windows XP.
What?s more, Google?s Docs software, which recently gained offline capabilities, represents a cheaper alternative to Office that?s getting better by the day. So, Microsoft has to make a solid case for upgrading to Office 15, a package that will include Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
If it doesn?t, the Redmond-based company could be in serious trouble. Charles King, an analyst with Pund-IT, said, ?If Office 15 is a bust, those repercussions will impact and potentially injure virtually every part of Microsoft.?
King isn?t exaggerating. Office accounted for $22.2 billion of Microsoft?s nearly $70 billion in revenue in the last fiscal year.
Office 15 is expected to work well with tablets, and some speculate that it will only run on Windows 8.
