DIY: Magnetic Chalk Board ? A Picture Frame Remake ...

Remember the bathroom redo I told you about? That was part of the Walmart Projects Made Simple program.? Walmart has a new website all about helping you make basic home improvement (DIY) projects simple, called Projects Made Simple.? They are providing step by step how-to videos (around 75 to 100 of them!) like painting an accent wall, installing a towel bar, and repairing a running toilet.? Accompanying each video is a product list and downloadable project guides.

Today, I got to try another fun project from the growing list over at the Projects Made Simple site.? I had fun making a magnetic chalkboard for Judah today.? We used an old picture I had squirreled away.? My thoughts were that I could use the frame for something later since I no longer liked the picture in it.? Today was that day. :)

I took the glass out of the frame along with the picture.? I painted over the picture since it was on a really heavy paperboard I just decided to paint right over top of it using Rust-oleum magnetic primer.? You could also cut a piece of wood or use another heavy piece of paperboard.? I gave the board 2 coats of magnetic primer.

Today was extremely hot and the only benefit to that was my paint dried really fast. (:? So, after the magentic primer dried I applied 3 coats of Rust-oleum chalkboard paint.

While that dried, I went ahead and painted the frame using a white acrylic craft paint.? Alternatively, you could spray paint the frame any color you desire.

This chalkboard is for Judah to play with so I added some glass letter magnets that I made using this tutorial from ehow and I used some leftover magnets and leftover foam stars from previous crafts to make a few light weight magnets for his new board (light weight magnets work best for this magnetic primer).? I gave him the magnets along with a box of colored chalk and told him he could go to town with it! (:

Of course, there is a ton of paint leftover and there are so many things this chalkboard paint will be good for.? You can literally use it on anything and on any surface.? It would be great for making lists on the inside of a kitchen cabinet, kids furniture/tables, or even a section of wall like the original how to video walks you through.
