Allergies can be defined as malfunctions in the immune system. When the immune system struggles against a particular substance, it can have an unpleasant reaction when it is exposed to it. Contact can come about because of a number of reasons, particles of allergy-inducing substances can be found in the air and the environment, or can be contained in certain foods. These reactions can be sudden, and result in a great deal of irritation, and at times, a great deal of risk.
The reaction is most often mild, as it happens for example in the case of hay fever. Commonly seen around spring time, this kind of reaction involves usually a runny nose, sneezing, reddened eyes and itchiness. Eczema also often appears.
There are a number of other cases in which the allergic reaction can be more severe and ultimately more damaging. This will be a problem among asthma sufferers, or people whose immune systems cannot tolerate specific medication or food, for example, peanuts. It is also true that poisonous insects may become lethal if the poison in their sting gets into certain immune systems.
It is possible to identify what a person reacts badly against through certain tests. If an allergy is identified, then a number of treatments can be carried out. Either the sufferer simply avoids any contact with the substance he suffers from, or specific medication such as anti-histamines or steroids may be taken to strengthen immunity.
There is a list of general problems which may cause the occurrence of a reaction. Sometimes, it can be blamed on the sufferer?s environment or diet. Other times, it is hereditary, or can arise out of exposure to poisonous substances as a child.
Allergies can be diagnosed both at a later, adult stage in life, or can be pointed out at any stage of your younger years. Some may never know they suffer from an allergy, and carry on living unknowingly. Most of the time, they are nothing to worry about and are relatively harmless. In few cases, the more severe reactions might be dangerous and even life-threatening.
